Mogwai to Gremlin: The ‘Reverse Butterfly’ Effect
At Bones & Butterflies, we’re trying to flutter to the beat of our own wings, often with a broken wing and crooked antennae. A recent image-generation adventure inspired a ton of ideas that I related back to a few brand ideas, and to life in general. (It made sense at the time.)
This late night journey we took is reminiscent of a certain 1984 cinematic escapade featuring creatures that don’t do well with late-night snacks. It’s a tale of transformation, chaos, and the inevitable growth from adorable to anarchist.
The Butterfly That Roared
Every brand has its cocoon phase, and as B&B wriggles free into the world, we do so with the reckless abandon of a gremlin after midnight. The transformation from the cute and cuddly to the slightly unhinged is a dance we know all too well. It’s reflected in our brand voice, which could be described as the love child of a stand-up comedian and a wannabe fashion designer that is forever on Spring Break.
The Reverse Butterfly Effect
Unlike actual butterflies, who emerge from their chrysalises with grace, our gremlin brand ambassadors find themselves in a ‘Reverse Butterfly’ situation. Through a twist of fate (and a few poorly timed midnight snacks), these not-so-little critters transformed from cute to chaotic. It’s a transformation we’ve all witnessed — the descent from the innocence of youth into the caffeine-fueled, responsibility-laden world of adulthood. Our gremlins, much like us, started off cute, but ended up with an RRSP (that got cashed out early), and established a track record for causing a ruckus in the workplace.
The Human Caterpillar
Just like those mischievous little mogwai characters, we humans have our own transformation tales. We grow from doe-eyed kids into creatures of the night who know better than to empty a fridge full of White Claws at 3am, but do it anyway. And what follows? Chaos. The chaos of adulthood, where “cute” is yesterday’s news, and “responsible” is the new black. It’s like we’ve eaten after midnight and woken up with tax returns to file, and bills we forgot to pay.
The Chaos Principle
The Chaos — the unofficial mascot of Bones & Butterflies. Our brand revels in the pandemonium that is life, embracing the inevitable change with a winky face emoji, and a shrug emoji. Our Gremlin-infused journey through imagery is a nod to that very principle. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? A night out with one drink too many, or pushing the snooze button one time too many, leading to a day where sunglasses are our best friend and coffee our elixir of life.
The Butterfly Effect
But as we know, every action has a reaction, and every gremlin has its butterfly. In the throes of chaos, there’s transformation, growth, and a little bit of beauty. B&B stands as a testament to this cycle. Our brand is the cocoon for a reverse metamorphosis, where “embracing the gremlin within” is just part of our story’s pattern.
Conclusion
So, here’s to the transformation and the inevitable march from cuteness to ‘adult-like person”’. At the end of the day, whether we feel (or look) like a gremlin right now, or we’re that butterfly version we always wanted to be – sometimes it takes a lot of the “chaos” to get back to the “comfortable”.
